Braze Audiences

Keep a Braze custom attribute in step with an Ours Privacy audience, so you can build Braze segments from the people who match it without exporting lists by hand.

BetaThis is in beta. The basics are stable, and more capabilities are on the way.

Use this page to connect an Ours Privacy audience to Braze. Each audience's Export Name becomes a value in one array custom attribute on matching Braze profiles, and once per day, a little after midnight UTC, Ours Privacy updates that attribute to match the audience. Build a Braze segment on the attribute to target the people who match.

Before you start

  • A Braze REST API key with the users.track permission. Create the key in Braze under Settings → APIs and Identifiers → API Keys. If Braze has enabled bulk user tracking for your workspace, also grant users.track.bulk. Ours Privacy uses it automatically when it is available, which makes syncs faster.
  • Your Braze instance, such as US-01 or EU-02. It matches your Braze dashboard URL and REST endpoint.
  • An Audience Builder audience whose members have email addresses, phone numbers, or both.
  • A neutral Export Name. It becomes the attribute value, and anyone with access to your Braze workspace can see it.

Set up Braze Audiences

  1. Add Braze Audiences from Destinations.
  2. Enter your Braze REST API key and select your Braze instance.
  3. Turn on matching by email, by phone, or both (see Matching Braze profiles below). A destination with both turned off cannot sync.
  4. Keep the default custom attribute name, ours_audiences, or enter your own.
  5. Decide whether Ours Privacy should create profiles for people who are not already in Braze (see New profiles below).
  6. Save and publish the destination settings.
  7. Open the audience you want to sync, set its Export Name, accept the data-sharing terms, and select Braze Audiences in Sync to Destinations.

Build a segment in Braze

After the first sync, create a segment in Braze with the custom attribute filter ours_audiences includes value and your audience's Export Name. The Sync to Destinations card shows the exact value Braze receives and lets you copy it. Use the segment in campaigns and Canvases like any other.

Every audience synced to the same destination shares the one attribute, so a profile that belongs to several audiences holds one value for each.

Matching Braze profiles

Email and phone matching are separate switches, and both are off by default.

  • Email. Addresses are trimmed and lowercased. Gmail dots and + suffixes are kept, because Braze matches the address as written.
  • Phone. Numbers are sent in international (E.164) format. A number stored with a + country code is used as written. A US or Canadian number stored without one, such as (212) 555-0142 or 12125550142, is given +1, unless the visitor's country says they are somewhere else. Any other number without a country code is skipped, because a guessed prefix would match nobody.

Each member is matched by email when they have a usable address, and by phone otherwise. If several Braze profiles share an email address, Braze updates the most recently updated one. Members without a usable enabled identifier are skipped.

New profiles

By default, Ours Privacy only updates profiles that already exist in Braze. People who are not in Braze are ignored, and no profile is created.

Turn on Create missing profiles to create a profile for them as well. Only turn this on for audiences of people who have agreed to hear from you.

What Braze receives

Braze receives your Export Name, as the attribute value, and the email address or phone number of each member. Braze matches profiles on the literal email address and phone number, so they are sent as plain values rather than hashed. Your audience conditions and internal audience name stay in Ours Privacy.

Keeping the attribute in step

Each nightly run adds the value to people who joined the audience and removes it from people who left, so a segment built on the value stops including them after the next sync. Removing the value does not delete, unsubscribe, or otherwise change the profile, and the profile's other attribute values are unaffected.

Members who have not changed are not sent again, apart from a weekly refresh. Braze counts each custom attribute update as a data point, so Ours Privacy sends only the changes.

Changing the Export Name or the attribute name moves the value on the next sync: the old value is removed and the new one is added. Update any Braze segment filters that name the old value.

If an audience matches no one, the next sync removes the value from its previously synced members.

Turning off Send email or Send phone stops sending that identifier after you publish the change. This also pauses removals that need it: those profiles may keep the value until you enable that identifier again. If you leave it off, clear any unwanted audience values directly in Braze.

Known limitations

  • If syncing stops working for more than about a month, for example because the API key was revoked, the next successful sync adds everyone currently in the audience but cannot remove people who left in the meantime. If that matters for your campaigns, clear the value from those profiles in Braze.
  • A very large audience can take more than one nightly sync to reach Braze in full. A sync that runs out of time shows as failed with the number of updates left, and the next sync continues where it stopped.
  • Removing Braze Audiences from an audience stops future syncs. Values already written stay on Braze profiles until you clear them in Braze.

Braze Audiences and the Braze destination

Braze Audiences is separate from the Braze destination, which sends events and profile updates as they happen. You can use both, but each needs its own destination in Ours Privacy.
