Mixpanel Features

The Ours Mixpanel integration lets you use Mixpanel's analytics — events, user profiles, funnels, and retention — while staying in full control of the PII and PHI that leaves your environment. Ours forwards the events you already track (along with user properties) into Mixpanel as first-class captured events, so your team gets the insights they need without raw patient data being sent directly from the browser.

You can redact, hash, or suppress sensitive fields before they reach Mixpanel, and choose exactly which events are forwarded through your Allow List.

What you can do with this integration

• Track events to power funnels, retention, and behavioral analysis using Mixpanel's Track Events API.
• Update user profiles with custom properties using Mixpanel's Set Property API.
• Control PII and PHI exposure by redacting, hashing, or omitting fields before they reach Mixpanel.

What this integration does not include

Mixpanel has features — like Web Analytics and certain default reports — that depend on a specific set of private events (such as $mp_web_page_view and $session_start) being captured in a proprietary format by Mixpanel's own browser SDK. The exact shape of those events is internal to Mixpanel and can change at any time, so this server-side integration does not attempt to reproduce them:

• Mixpanel Web Analytics (pageview rankings, session metrics, bounce rate).
• Session Replay.
• Default dashboards and reports that rely on Mixpanel's private event taxonomy.
• Autocapture of clicks, form changes, and submissions.

If you need any of the above, you can install the Mixpanel browser SDK alongside this destination — the two are designed to coexist. The Ours integration will continue to forward the events in your Allow List as first-class captured events, so funnels, retention, and any custom dashboards built on those events keep working as expected.

Adding Mixpanel as a destination

To add a destination, click on Destinations from your Ours platform. Click the Add destination button and select Mixpanel as the destination type to add.

Then, copy and paste your project token into the Ours destination configuration tool and press Save.

Find your Mixpanel project token

1. Log into your Mixpanel project
2. Navigate to Settings
3. On the Setup Guide, you should see the option to Copy project token

Sending User Properties

All events in your Allow List configured to send to this destination will be sent with their event data, including any tracked event properties. Toggling this ON will also send any tracked user properties. Toggling this OFF will not send any tracked user properties.

When It Dispatches

Our Mixpanel integration dispatches events automatically when the required data properties are present. Specifically:

1. Necessary Properties: An event will be dispatched if it includes a valid Mixpanel Project Token and configuration for the destination. Additionally, the visitor information must be present to ensure the event can be processed by Mixpanel.

2. Event Type: Dispatch occurs for all event types configured within your Mixpanel setup, allowing flexible tracking of various user interactions.

3. Automatic Retry: If the Mixpanel API encounters an error suggesting a temporary issue, the system will automatically attempt to re-dispatch the event. Non-retryable errors, such as missing configurations, will prevent additional attempts.

This configuration ensures that events are only dispatched to Mixpanel when sufficient data is present, enabling precise tracking of user interactions within your Mixpanel dashboard.

Privacy and Compliance

This integration runs through Ours Privacy's standard event pipeline, so PHI fields can be redacted, hashed, or suppressed before they ever reach Mixpanel. You control which events are forwarded through your Allow List, giving you HIPAA-compliant analytics without compromising on the insights your team needs.
